Ex-Rutgers Student Gets 30 Days for Spying on Roommate

Dharun Ravi, a 20-year-old former Rutgers University student convicted of bias crimes for spying on his gay roommate, was sentenced to 30 days in jail. Ravi had faced a maximum of 10 years in prison and still could be deported for his conviction.

Ravi used a webcam to stream video of his roommate, Tyler Clementi, who later committed suicide. The case drew international attention and illustrated the reach of the law into the realm of online social media.
